Beware of design trends.

November 30, 2011 - Leave a Response

Some trends may turn into classic design statements over time but there are just as many that can become a very expensive source of regret. Unless you are absolutely in love with the next best thing, try to stick with the classics that will not date your interiors. If you have to include the color of the moment or that brand new type of countertop material do so in moderation in case you happen to change your mind in the future.

Impulse Purchases

October 21, 2011 - Leave a Response

Resist making impulse buys where your home decor is involved.  Put together a master plan for your space including what decorative accessories and artwork should be included.  Work towards making specific purchases that fill the requiremenjts of your plan.  Buying desorative items on impulse can mean being stuck with items that you will never use.

Seasonal Changes and Décor Transitions Go Hand in Hand!

October 16, 2011 - Leave a Response

While summer’s lush beauty transitions to the autumnal festival of color, our windows frame nature’s more amazing works of art outdoors, and the visual passage of time. It’s so tempting to bring autumn’s rich color palette indoors, and your windows can be the perfect place to transition from old style to newer and fresher, all without starting from scratch or busting a budget.
So many of us just LOVE our crisp, “hard” window fashions for their trim, tailored look. think shutters, mini-blinds, and the newer hybrid hard/soft slatted sheer products among them, all wonderful for light control and preserving views AND privacy. A great way to update that harder, finished look is by adding a soft component with a layer of drapery that makes windows feel more luxurious, tailored, and even more comfortable.

Adding this layer can be as simple as introducing a beautiful custom fabric valance to top off your current “hard” window treatment, or as expansive as framing your windows with gorgeous soft fabric custom draperies. It’s all a lot easier than you think when you call a Window Fashions Professional like me to help make your window ideas come true. We’ll work within your budget, share ideas, and update your room. all you need do is give me a call, and we’ll set up our first, FREE at-home consultation. Together, we’ll make your room more beautiful!

Transform Your Décor with Slipcovers

April 9, 2011 - Leave a Response

No, I’m not talking about those loose and lumpy covers that your Grandmother had. Today’s slipcovers are custom fitted, tailored, and made to order for your furniture. There is no need to worry about pinning or tucking loose fabric in place, custom slipcovers fit your furnishings like a glove. They are low maintenance, washable, and a reasonably priced alternative to replacing upholstery.

Slipcovers can be made in almost any type of fabric and in a myriad of styles. They can transform a less than stylish piece of furniture into the latest trend easily and inexpensively. In today’s interiors with the current popularity of French and Belgian design, slipcovers have become a key element that provides variety and flexibility.

Whether made from linen, flax, cotton, or even burlap these versatile furniture covers have never been more popular. Here are some tips for using slipcovers in your décor:

Start Small: If you want to introduce a new color or pattern try using slips on your dining room chair cushions or a small ottoman or bench. Pick small but prominent pieces in your room to cover.

Go Big: Cover that ugly sofa or settee that you got from your parents in a fresh neutral fabric. Use throw pillows for a pop of color and contrast.

Get Stylish: Consider adding some detailed finishing touches to the design of your cover like a pleated ruffle, buttoned tabs, long ties, or contrasting welt. These small additions will add up to a big impact on your finished slipcover.

Change it Up: Use slipcovers as a seasonal addition to your room to change the look and feel of the space during the winter or summer. Variety is the spice of life and adding some of that spice to your décor can energize your surroundings.

Be Daring: Slipcovers are not just for upholstered furnishings. Try a sheer cover over a table or dining chair, a bench or foot stool. Cover a lampshade or chandelier.

Add Durability: Have your slipcover provider pre-wash your fabric before constructing your covers so they are machine washable. Skipping this important step may lead to a shrunken and ill fitting slip after it’s washed.

How to start the process…

April 4, 2011 - Leave a Response

Start with a clean slate.  When redecorating or rearranging a room remove everything from it and them reintroduce each item into the room one at a time.  Try new arrangements of your large furnishings until you get the layout to your liking.  Take this opportunity to remove clutter and carefully edit as you accessorize the room.

Beautiful Sheers

April 1, 2011 - Leave a Response

This week we at Window Wear & More installed these beautiful sheers for a client that recently moved back from Europe.  Prior to leaving she had visited a friends home and was so impressed with her draperies she wanted something similar in her home in the states.

We were able to find some reasonably priced linen and fabricate these unstructured sheers and mounted them to some specialty iron rods.  Viola!  She feels like she is back in Europe.  Mission accomplished – very happy client!!

Decorating Tips

April 1, 2011 - Leave a Response

Don’t decorate for today; design for tomorrow.  Is the room you are decorating right now still going to appeal to you five years from now?  One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking that they won’t be living in their residence for very long or they will be upgrading to a new home and that their decor is temporary.  You should be building a foundation of classic furnishings that you can take with you anywhere.

Mounting blinds with no holes in the door

March 31, 2011 - Leave a Response
Blind mounted with magnets

look ma - no holes!

I have a client that recently purchased new windows and doors from Wheaton Windows and Doors.  The doors are steel and the manufacturer of the doors specifically stated that drilling into the doors would void the warranty. This is something we have never come across in the 18 years that we at Window Wear & More have been in business.  Our initial idea was to install the Hunter Douglas Literise Duettes using 3m tape and sure enough the jumped off the doors in no time.

We were able to come up with a magnetic fix that with 2 specialty magnets will hold up to 60+ pounds.  They are a very small – 1 1/2 inches and we mounted them to the brackets.  I have had them hanging on my file cabinets for days.  They arent going to come off unless you really work at it.

 Happy client!!
